WHAT HAPPENED

Stellantis, the maker of Jeep and Chrysler, confirmed it had signed a memorandum of understanding with Roshel on a potential sale of its Brampton plant. Unifor, the union representing Canadian autoworkers, had bargained with Stellantis since September 1, using its summer contracts with Ford and GM as a pattern. After 10 days it declared an impasse. It said the 'persistence of the company's proposal to close and sell the Brampton plant has hindered the bargaining process'. Stellantis Canada's chief executive, Trevor Longley, gave the company's case in an emailed statement reported by The Canadian Press. He called Roshel 'a strong path to restoring sustainable operations at Brampton Assembly'. Stellantis has not given its side of the talks. Longley said it would not comment further 'out of respect for the collective bargaining process with Unifor'.

Why this matters

Brampton's future is tied to the contract for all of Stellantis's Canadian workers, more than 9,000 by Dow Jones's count. The union says it will not settle without a Brampton resolution.

Stellantis has signed a memorandum of understanding with Roshel, a Canadian armoured-vehicle maker, on a potential sale of its Brampton assembly plant. No sale has closed. Unifor says the company told it on August 12, 2026 that it would open talks with another firm about selling the plant. More than 2,000 Brampton workers are laid off.

Ottawa says any sale of the Brampton plant must respect the employment commitments Stellantis made when it accepted government financing. A federal industry department spokesman said so on September 11, 2026, Dow Jones reported. In October 2025 Ottawa had already halved Stellantis's quota of US-built vehicles it may import free of Canada's 2025 tariff on US-built vehicles. It cited the company's cancelled production plans for Brampton.
