US tariffs signed in July take effect on August 22
Moment dated Aug 22, 2026; earliest linked report published Sep 13, 2026.
President Trump signed the tariffs on July 20, 2026, to start on August 19. On August 18 he delayed them three days, citing the status of the negotiations with Canada. Prime Minister Carney suspended those talks on the evening of August 21. He said 'last-minute changes in the U.S. proposed terms were unfair, uneconomic, and called into question the reliability of any deal'. He said Canada 'will match those tariffs dollar for dollar'. At 12:01 a.m. on August 22 the 50 per cent tariffs took effect on a list of Canadian goods.
Why this matters
Each government describes an offer of its own on autos. Carney says Canada was willing to drop its counter-tariffs on steel, aluminum and autos if the United States substantially lowered its own. The White House says the US offered 'deep cuts on steel, aluminum, autos, lumber, and more'.

US tariffs of 50 per cent on a list of Canadian goods have been in force since August 22, 2026. President Trump signed them in July 2026, a month before Canada suspended trade talks. Canada values the goods at C$27.6 billion. The White House says they do not apply to products already under Section 232 tariffs, which include cars.
