Canada's counter-tariffs take effect, and the US signs import bans the same day
Moment dated Sep 8, 2026; earliest linked report published Sep 10, 2026.
Canada's counter-tariffs took effect at 12:01 a.m. on September 8 on a list of US goods. Canada's 2025 tariff on some US-built vehicles stayed. The same day President Trump signed five proclamations. They add and remove goods on the US tariff list from September 15. They also schedule bans on some Canadian goods for September 29, among them packaged beer, wine and spirits, whey products and motorcycles over 800 cc.
Why this matters
Each government describes its own step as a response to the other's. The White House says the bans respond to Canada's 'additional retaliation'. Canada's customs notice says its counter-tariffs, which it calls a surtax, respond to the US tariffs.
