WHAT HAPPENED

Ontario widened two tariff-relief programs, the C$1 billion Protect Ontario Financing Program and the C$150 million Ontario Together Trade Fund. Exporters of goods hit by the US measures of September 8 can apply from the day each measure starts. Premier Doug Ford also changed his cabinet. 'We're preparing for the long haul,' he said.

Why this matters

Ontario says the change gives businesses 'critical capital support so they can keep their doors open, keep workers on the job'. Canada's National Observer quoted John Fraser, the Ontario Liberals' interim leader. He called the change 'sensible' but said it 'opens the door without putting new money on the table'.

More exporters are scheduled to become eligible for two Ontario tariff-relief programs, each on the day the US measure against its goods starts. Ontario made the change on September 10, 2026, for the C$1 billion Protect Ontario Financing Program and the C$150 million Ontario Together Trade Fund. The first group was due to join on September 15, and the second is scheduled for September 29.
