WHAT HAPPENED

On August 25, 2026 the federal government announced counter-tariffs on C$27.6 billion of U.S. imports, to take effect on September 8. The rates were 15, 25 and 50 per cent. Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne said Canada would match the U.S. tariffs 'dollar for dollar, rate for rate'. The government paired the counter-tariffs with a C$7.5 billion package of supports for workers and businesses.

Why this matters

Canada put a date on its counter-tariffs, September 8, two weeks after the announcement. The support package on August 25 was a list of programs and amounts.
