The White House gives Washington's account
On August 25, 2026 Canada announced its counter-tariffs. The same day the White House published its account under the title 'President Trump Is Finally Ending Canada's Free Ride'. The United States, it said, had offered Canada 'the most preferential market access of any country on Earth'. In its words 'Canada chose unreasonable demands, walk-backs, and flat-out rejection'. The release listed what it called 'Canadian abuse', among them provincial alcohol bans, 25 per cent tariffs and quotas on U.S. vehicles, and dairy quotas. Canada's announcement of tariffs on American steel, aluminum, fish and tools was on the list too.
Why this matters
Four days after the collapse each government had set out its account in its own document. Carney said the last U.S. changes were unfair. The White House said Canada turned down the best access offered to any country.
