WHAT HAPPENED

At 12:01 a.m. eastern time on Saturday, August 22, 2026, U.S. tariffs of 50 per cent took effect on a list of Canadian goods. Canada's finance department values the goods at C$27.6 billion, and The Associated Press (AP) at about US$20 billion. President Trump had signed the tariffs on July 20 with an August 19 start. On August 18 he suspended them for three days, citing the status of the negotiations. They do not apply, the White House says, to energy, potash, goods under Section 232 tariffs and certain others, such as fish or critical minerals. AP reports that they cover about 5 per cent of Canadian exports to the United States. The U.S. business that imports a listed good pays the tariff.

Why this matters

August 22 was the first day anyone paid one of the tariffs signed in July 2026. By AP's figure the list covers about one twentieth of what Canada sells to the United States.

The 50 per cent U.S. tariffs were signed a month before they took effect. Proclamations 11046, 11047 and 11048, signed July 20, 2026, scheduled them for August 19. On August 18 Proclamation 11056 suspended them for three days, to 12:01 a.m. eastern time on August 22. The talks collapsed on the evening of August 21, and the tariffs took effect the next day.
