WHAT HAPPENED

US Central Command, the US military command for the region, announced on September 8 that its forces had destroyed five Iranian crude oil carriers. By its account, Iran's Revolutionary Guard had fired ballistic missiles at a US Navy warship twice in the two days before. The Guard, a branch of Iran's military with its own navy, made its announcement the next day. It listed attacks on two US vessels and eight oil tankers and called them a response to the US strike on its tankers. Reuters called the exchange the biggest spike in attacks on shipping since the war began.

Why this matters

The two statements start in different places. The US one begins with missiles fired at a warship, which the Guard's statement does not mention. The Guard's begins with the strike on its tankers.
