Thirty-five years of backing, tallied on Independence Day
On Ukraine's 35th Independence Day, three Canadian ministers issued a joint statement adding up the relationship: Canada was the first Western country to recognize Ukraine's independence in 1991, had committed more than $25.5 billion since Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022, and had extended Operation UNIFIER, its mission training Ukrainian soldiers, until 2029. The statement also gave notice of a September conference in Toronto on returning Ukraine's deported children.
Why this matters
This fixes the starting line: before the September visit, Canada's support was already broad, old and growing, and the fall calendar was already set. The visit that followed escalated a commitment that was already decades old.
