Honda suspends its Ontario EV project indefinitely

WHAT HAPPENED

On May 14 Honda Canada suspended its Ontario electric-vehicle project indefinitely, including an EV plant it said could have created 1,000 manufacturing jobs in Alliston. The project also covered a battery plant and two battery-materials plants run as joint ventures. Honda cited 'evolving business conditions, a change in external resource strategy and shifting customer demand'.

Why this matters

Honda has neither cancelled the project nor named a restart date. The jobs at its existing Alliston plant continue, and the new ones wait with the project.

Factual assertion Supported by evidence. Read this claim alongside its limits on products, dates or people covered. A source announcing a plan does not show that it happened.

Honda's Ontario electric-vehicle project has been indefinitely suspended since May 14, 2026. Honda unveiled it in April 2024 at approximately C$15 billion, including investment by joint-venture partners. It postponed the project in May 2025. The suspension names no restart date, and Honda says its Alliston plant keeps building Civic and CR-V models.

What exactly did Honda commit to when it suspended its Ontario EV project? →
Stated position Statement documented. The source records what was said or reported. It does not verify the claim itself.

Honda says no public money reached it for its suspended EV project. Its May 14, 2026 statement says the project had 'a future funding commitment from both provincial and federal governments'. It says 'no funds have been transferred to Honda' under that commitment. In April 2024 Ontario had promised up to C$2.5 billion, and Ottawa estimated its tax-credit support at about C$2.5 billion.
