Each government ties its auto tariffs to where cars are built, in its own words.
President Trump's August 24 post says 'Build in the U.S. and there are ZERO TARIFFS.' Canada's tariff on US-built vehicles, which Ottawa calls a countermeasure, spares a quota of vehicles for automakers that keep up production in Canada. The United States objects to those quotas. Prime Minister Carney says the US 'asked too much and offered too little'. Ontario feels it because Canada's car assembly plants are there.
