Both leaders say a deal is possible, and no talks are scheduled
On the weekend of September 12, 2026, President Trump said his administration could reach a trade deal with Canada 'fairly soon'. On September 14 Prime Minister Mark Carney told Bloomberg he welcomed the comments. Canada, he said, was ready to negotiate a deal that respects its sovereignty and cultural institutions, and would 'sit down when it makes sense'. On September 15 he told his Canada Investment Summit that Canada intends to emerge stronger, more resilient and more independent. About 80 per cent of Canada's trade with the United States remains tariff-free, he said. He left that day for Europe. No negotiations were scheduled.
Why this matters
While both leaders spoke of a deal, tariffs were in force both ways and U.S. import bans were two weeks from their start date.
